Abstract:
With the acceleration of globalization, the rapid development of information technology, and the increasingly severe environmental problems, geography, as a science that studies the interaction and spatiotemporal changes of natural and human elements on the Earth's surface, has become increasingly important. As an important base for the inheritance and innovation of geographical knowledge, the development status of the geography discipline in higher education institutions directly affects the overall level of national geography education and the quality of training geography professionals. However, in the face of the new requirements of the new era, there are still many shortcomings in the curriculum system, teaching methods, faculty, scientific research innovation, and other aspects of the geography discipline in Chinese higher education institutions, which make it difficult to fully meet the demand for geography professionals in society. In response to the insufficient understanding of the uniqueness of geography education in Chinese universities and the declining popularity of serving society, suggestions are put forward for the reform and revitalization of geography education in universities. Starting from top-level design, in terms of training objectives, we break through the narrow framework of cultivating geography teachers and researchers, and rely on the natural connection between geography education and educational philosophy. With a new positioning that blends patriotism and geographical thinking, we aim to build a new type of university geography discipline. To achieve this, three important reform and revitalization measures must be taken: firstly, clarify the knowledge structure of geography and establish the independence of geography in education. Secondly, with the characteristic thinking of deep cross disciplinary integration of arts and sciences, optimize the professional structure. Finally, strengthen the awareness of serving society and return to the practical nature of geography. New geography talents must have a global perspective, patriotism, and the professional ability to build a sustainable development of human society and a community with a shared future for mankind.
