Abstract:

The production technique of Wuchuan tile kiln pottery drums is one of the fifth batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritages in Guangdong Province. The related products are currently preserved in Wuyao Village, Meishu Street, Wuchuan City. Wayao Village was once a pottery village, located near a water source and backed by a hillside. With abundant clay, the villagers made pottery as their profession. According to historical records, the manufacturing of pottery drums in tile kilns began in the late Tang Dynasty. The shape of the pottery drum in the kiln resembles a long necked vase, with a small waist and varying sizes of drum openings. After covering it with sheepskin, a rope is needed to tighten the drum surface for tuning. The tile kiln pottery drum was once the main accompaniment instrument for folk Nuo dance in Wuchuan. After the reform and opening up, in order to better inherit and promote the art of tile kiln pottery drums, folk artist and retired veteran cadre of Wuchuan Cultural Center, Ou Jingqin, went through a series of arrangements and arrangements to make the tile kiln pottery drums play the advantages of waist drum instruments that can dance while playing. Dance movements were added during performance, which gave rise to the "tile kiln pottery drum dance" and made the tile kiln pottery drums known and appreciated by more people.
