Abstract:
This study employs acoustic experiment to compare the characteristics of monophthong /æ/ between English majors and non-majors in the Han-Xin Sub-dialect Area. By measuring F1 and F2 formant parameters of 8 college students (4 English majors and 4 non-majors), the study found that English majors demonstrate pronunciation closer to native speakers’ standards, and significantly better pronunciation stability compared to non-majors. The results indicate that systematic pronunciation training effectively reduces negative dialect transfer and improves target sound accuracy. The study suggests integrating acoustic visualization tools like Praat into English teaching in the dialect areas and strengthening training in continuous speech contexts.
