Abstract:

With the continuous advancement of digital technologies, particularly large language models (LLMs), China's educational digital transformation strategy is progressing to more sophisticated levels. A critical challenge involves innovating models that synergize industry, academia, research, and application, developing educational LLMs, and leveraging these to propel university digital transformation and the cultivation of top-tier innovative talents. This paper centers on the practice of "Digital BUPT," the digital transformation initiative at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). It details BUPT's collaborative efforts with iFlytek Co., Ltd., focusing on the integration of industry and education, and the convergence of technology and pedagogy. The exploration and practical applications of LLMs across various domains—including teaching and learning, talent development, scientific research innovation, and faculty-student services—are examined. The paper argues that higher education must foster creative "AI + Education" top innovators, shift towards student-centered pedagogical models that cultivate interdisciplinary talents, transition teacher roles towards "human-machine collaboration," and emphasize the development of digital literacy centered on critical thinking and creativity. Key practices discussed include the evolution from smart classrooms and a teaching cloud platform towards building LLM-empowered personalized adaptive learning platforms; pioneering a LLM-powered programming instruction platform ("CodeUp") in Chinese higher education through industry-academia integration and student innovation projects; and constructing adaptive learning systems driven by both knowledge graphs and LLMs. Furthermore, BUPT actively engages in domestic and international standardization for educational LLMs and establishes joint laboratories with leading industry partners. This paper posits that BUPT's proactive exploration of a new industry-academia-research collaboration mechanism, with the educational LLM at its core, offers valuable experience for other universities undergoing digital transformation.
