Abstract:

This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of the green bond market in Australia, with a particular focus on New South Wales (NSW), to understand its current state, development, and future trends. It explores the emergence of green bonds as a pivotal financial instrument in fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship within the Australian context. Through an examination of the NSW Treasury Corporation's Sustainability Bond Programme, the thesis illustrates how such initiatives align with broader environmental goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby attracting significant investor interest and fostering a robust market for green finance. The study also offers a comparative analysis between the Australian and Chinese green bond markets, highlighting their respective growth trajectories and the challenges and opportunities faced by issuers and investors. This comparison sheds light on the global dynamics of green finance and the pivotal role played by policy frameworks and market demand in shaping the development of green bonds. Forecasting future trends, the research anticipates a sustained growth in the green bond market, driven by increasing regulatory support, a diversifying issuer base, and a deepening understanding of the critical role of sustainable finance in addressing climate change. It underscores the importance of transparency, standardization, and innovation in bond structures to meet the evolving needs of both issuers and investors.
