Abstract:

From the theoretical perspective of Skopos Theory, this paper explores the translation approaches to long and complex sentences in petroleum science and technology texts. Characterized by high information density and rigorous expression, petroleum science and technology texts are replete with long and complex sentences, which constitute the primary difficulties in translation. By analyzing the syntactic features of English for petroleum science and technology, and combining the three rules of Skopos Theory—the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule—this paper proposes and demonstrates the specific application skills of reverse translation, sequential translation and splitting translation in dealing with long and complex sentences. The research shows that in translating such texts, the translation should be oriented toward the information acquisition efficiency of target readers, and logical restructuring should be realized through flexible skill transformation, so as to achieve the translation purpose of accurately and efficiently conveying scientific and technological information.
