Abstract:

The acquisition of vocabulary is essential in second language learning, yet traditional rote memorization often leads to disengagement among students. This study investigates the use of game-based applications to enhance learners’ motivation and improve vocabulary acquisition in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. By examining three empirical studies, this paper explores the impact of educational games on student motivation and language learning outcomes. It also reviews the relationship between self-determination theory and motivation in language learning, proposing a game-based vocabulary application, "Baicizhan," as a tool for improving student engagement. The proposed teaching plan involves a 60-minute lesson incorporating video-based activities, guided discovery, Kahoot games, and peer assessment. The study’s evaluation includes pre-test and post-test comparisons, along with student feedback through questionnaires. The findings suggest that game-based learning can effectively enhance motivation, vocabulary retention, and academic performance, offering valuable insights for future language teaching practices.
