Abstract:
This article mainly studies the genre formation process of Philippine popular music evolution. This article attempts to explore how the popular music genre in the Philippines was formed by providing a theoretical hypothesis based on the cognitive differences among different stakeholders regarding the genre. Specifically, this article attempts to explore how foreign music genres integrate with local culture in order to showcase the national image of the Philippines, which is the key to forming a true Philippine pop music genre. The change in genre is not an imitation of foreign music, but a unique manifestation of the artistic wisdom of Filipino musicians in pursuing their own voices, and a continuation of their nationalist movement in their popular music.
