Abstract:
Language, while a fundamental medium for conveying meaning, has become insufficient in the age of digital multimedia. Traditional stylistic analysis faces similar limitations, leading to the emergence of multimodal stylistics—an approach that examines not only language but also other semiotic modes such as typography, layout, image, and color. Movie posters, as multimodal texts, integrate these elements to offer both visual appeal and condensed thematic expression. The poster of Lost in the Stars presents a rich case for such analysis. Applying the framework of multimodal functional stylistics, this study examines the salient features and synergistic relationships among word, image, layout, typography, and color in the poster. The analysis shows that through coordinated multimodal design, the poster effectively conveys the film’s themes, hints at its narrative development, reveals its underlying meaning, engages viewer curiosity, and achieves a strong promotional effect.
