Abstract:

The Earth system model is an important tool for understanding the mechanisms of past climate and environmental evolution and predicting potential global change scenarios in the future. It is an important platform for integrating geoscience related research and has become an international cutting-edge topic. The research object of geographic information science is developing from the traditional surface of the Earth to the entire Earth system. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the theory and key technologies of Earth system models from the perspective of Earth information science, including key concepts and component relationships of Earth system models, analysis of key technologies of Earth system models (including numerical models and solving methods, parameterization methods, high-performance computing methods, massive data storage methods, etc.), analysis of key data of Earth system models (including reanalysis data from the United States, Europe, Japan, and China, etc.), and analysis of Earth system model forecasting methods (including ensemble forecasting, multi-scale forecasting, intelligent forecasting, high spatiotemporal resolution forecasting, etc.). Finally, the future development trends and application prospects of Earth system modeling research were discussed.

Key Words:
