Abstract:

Based on the attention to physical geography and the recent heated discussion of the "infrastructure shift", there has been a quiet reflection on the traditional understanding of infrastructure ontology and methodology in geography. The article systematically reviews the concept and cutting-edge issues of "the body as infrastructure" in geography. Through sorting, it is found that the study of "body as infrastructure" in geography is mainly carried out from three core dimensions: firstly, the body is regarded as a "mobile" infrastructure. This aspect requires attention to the embodied flow practice of the human body, especially its key role in understanding social spatial power relations. On the other hand, it also requires attention to the social spatial impact generated by the movement of the human body. Secondly, the body serves as the daily infrastructure of the city. In this understanding, the body can be seen to some extent as a means of negotiating and resisting social power to address the infrastructure violence it faces and challenge the existing urban spatial order. At the same time, the body also becomes a temporary infrastructure for flexible configuration, supporting the operation of the urban social spatial system. Finally, through the introduction of a feminist geographical perspective, the existence of the body as a social care infrastructure was discussed, focusing on how the bodies of women and other marginalized groups can help build, develop, and maintain the functioning of society through their daily life practices. The introduction of the concept of "the body as infrastructure" not only broadens the ontological understanding of "infrastructure", but also benefits a deeper understanding of how the body is shaped by social and environmental factors, making it better suited for future research.
