Abstract:

As a unique theme in Buddhist iconography, the evolution of Avalokiteshvara of the Moon over Water profoundly reflects the complex course of the Sinicization of Buddhism. From the "metaphor of observing the moon in water" in Buddhist scriptures to a classic paradigm in Chinese indigenous art, the iconography of Avalokiteshvara of the Moon over Water is not only a visual transformation of religious symbols but also an artistic crystallization of cultural integration and the convergence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

Key Words:

Water-Moon Guanyin; Sinicization of Buddhism; Dazu rock carvings; Ten-Thousand Buddha Grotto at Qingliang Mountain
