Abstract:

Recombinant proteins have been widely used in food and medicine industry, which create huge economic and social benefits. Several expression platforms are currently being used to produce recombinant proteins, wherein the microbial expression systems have received the widest attention due to its ease of cultivation and simplicity of operation. There are many efforts to modify and optimize of expression systems to achieve high-efficiency production of recombinant proteins. This paper summarizes the recent progresses on developing new methods or tools to increase recombinant protein production in the three commonly used microbial expression hosts, including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Pichia pastoris. Moreover, future research directions in recombinant proteins expression are also discussed. By optimizing the combination of different influencing factors, combined with kinetic parameters, cell compartments measurement, and omics-derived large datasets, it is expected to obtain better protein expression strains.
