An Analysis of Pragmatic Presupposition in Xi’s New Year Speech in 2025

Abstract:

This study explores the types of pragmatic presupposition in the New Year speech delivered by the President Xi in 2025, and further summarizes its pragmatic functions, so as to deepen the understanding of the characteristics of this kind of discourse. The study found that, firstly, four types of pragmatic presuppositions are used in the speech: existential presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition and non-factive presupposition. Secondly, the functions of economy, cohesion and coherence, and inspiring people’s hearts are achieved via certain types of presuppositions.
