Abstract:

Drug interaction is a critical issue that cannot be overlooked in clinical polypharmacy. It refers to the phenomenon where the intensity, duration, or nature of the pharmacological effect of one or more drugs is altered due to mutual interference when two or more drugs are administered simultaneously or sequentially, consequently affecting clinical efficacy and safety. With the aging population, the increasing number of patients with chronic diseases, and the widespread adoption of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment models, polypharmacy scenarios are becoming increasingly common. Consequently, the incidence of medication safety incidents caused by drug interactions is rising annually. These interactions may not only reduce therapeutic efficacy and exacerbate adverse drug reactions but also prolong disease duration, increase healthcare burdens, and pose more serious threats to the health of special populations. This article, combined with clinical examples, systematically elaborates on the theoretical basis of drug interactions and their specific impacts on clinical medication safety. It proposes multi-dimensional intervention strategies involving healthcare institutions, medical staff, patients, and information technology. The aim is to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for standardizing clinical medication practices, mitigating risks associated with drug interactions, and ensuring patient medication safety.
