Research on the Protection and Innovation of Hainan Flower and Rose Wood Carving Art in the Context of the Free Trade Port

Abstract:
Hainan Huagui wood carving, a national intangible cultural heritage, primarily features divine statues and wooden puppets, adhering to the principle of equal emphasis on carving and coloring techniques. Amid the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, it faces practical challenges such as material shortages, a talent gap, and a limited market. This paper employs an analytical and comparative study of its artistic characteristics to examine the underlying causes of these challenges. By aligning with the free trade port's planning objectives to establish policy guidance and using age stratification as a market benchmark, it proposes targeted conservation and innovation strategies: implementing emergency preservation through digital archiving and oral history documentation; fostering talent development via industry-academia-research collaboration and developing alternative materials; adapting designs to diverse market demands through visual interpretation and product segmentation; and strengthening institutional safeguards by integrating online and offline distribution channels. The study aims to establish a practical framework for the living preservation of Huagui wood carving, helping it become a distinctive cultural symbol of Hainan.
