Labor Mobility and Coordinated Regional Development from the Perspective of Common Prosperity

Abstract:
The cross-regional mobility of labor, as a core factor of production, serves as a critical nexus linking regional development to the goal of common prosperity. Grounded in the strategic context of Chinese modernization, this paper systematically reviews the phased characteristics and structural transformations of labor mobility in China since the reform and opening-up, elucidates the bidirectional interactive mechanisms between labor mobility and coordinated regional development, and analyzes the deep-seated contradictions in the current mobility landscape that constrain regional equilibrium. The findings reveal that China's labor mobility has entered a new stage, transitioning from scale-driven expansion and unidirectional agglomeration to quality-oriented upgrading and multi-center networked distribution. This transformation has, on the one hand, supported the pioneering development of the eastern region and national economic growth through optimized resource allocation; on the other hand, it has intensified regional differentiation due to institutional barriers and unequal access to public services. Looking ahead, it is essential to deepen hukou system reform as a key lever, leverage industrial gradient transfer as a vehicle, and uphold the equalization of public services as a foundation, thereby constructing a labor factor allocation system characterized by orderly mobility, efficient allocation, and shared benefits, so as to inject sustained momentum into coordinated regional development.
