Socioeconomic and Physiographic Factors Influencing Asthma Hospitalization Rates in Guangxi, China

Abstract:

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the impact of socioeconomic and environmental factors on the spatial distribution of asthma hospitalization rates in Guangxi, China. Study Design: The relationship between asthma hospitalization rate distribution and socioeconomic factors was studied in areas with different economic and environmental conditions in Guangxi, China. Methods: Spearman correlation coefficients were used to preliminarily screen key environmental factors. Based on the spatial distribution patterns of asthma in Guangxi, the optimal regression model was selected through a series of operations. Combined with interaction results from geographical detectors, interaction terms were added to construct a socioeconomic–environment–asthma model. Results: The key social-environmental factors that affected the distribution of asthma are: GDP per capita (31%), NDVI (20%), number of hospital beds per capita (19%), and altitude (10%). Research showed that GDP per capita, number of hospital beds per capita, and asthma hospitalization rates were generally positively correlated; the increase in vegetation coverage had a protective effect on asthma, which gradually weakened from west to east. Conclusions: There is a positive correlation between the level of economic development and asthma hospitalization rates. Increasing the allocation of medical resources and medical and health facilities in some areas of Guangxi will help provide better diagnosis and treatment services to more asthma patients.
