A Study of Pragmatic Presupposition and its Functions in News Reports of the Paris Olympic Games

Abstract:

This study collects Chinese and English news reports from China Daily and Xinhua News during the 2024 Paris Olympics and qualitatively analyzes pragmatic presupposition types and functions via presupposition triggers. The findings reveal four main types: existential, factive, lexical and structural presupposition, while non-factive and counter-factual do not appear. Their functions include providing background information and arousing readers’ interest. The research demonstrates how pragmatic presupposition efficiently conveys implicit information and enhances news readability, though it has limitations in data timeframe and diversity.
