Abstract:
In the context of global digitalization and deepening cross-cultural exchanges, cross-cultural communication competence (CCC) has become an essential literacy for college students, particularly in language-related fields such as translation and international business. Digital-intelligent tools, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and big data, have emerged as innovative carriers for CCC cultivation, addressing traditional pedagogical limitations regarding authentic scenarios and personalized guidance. However, existing research often lacks a systematic analysis of how these tools align with specific CCC dimensions and fails to provide a comprehensive evaluation framework integrating quantitative and qualitative indicators. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining literature review, quasi-experiment, questionnaire survey, and semi-structured interviews, to explore the application effects and evaluation methods of digital-intelligent tools in CCC cultivation. A total of 320 non-English major undergraduates and 56 college English teachers from four universities in Liaoning Province participated in a 16-week empirical study utilizing eight mainstream digital-intelligent tools. Results indicate that: Digital-intelligent tools significantly improve learners' overall CCC, with machine translation (MT) tools reducing cultural translation errors by 41.3% and virtual exchange platforms increasing intercultural sensitivity scores by 39.7%; Tool effectiveness varies by learner characteristics, with business majors showing 22.5% higher adaptation to VR negotiation simulators than engineering majors, and sophomores outperforming freshmen in utilizing cultural knowledge databases; A multi-dimensional evaluation method combining translation task error rates, CCC scale scores, reflective journals, and teaching logs is 37% more accurate in measuring tool effects than single quantitative evaluation. This study enriches the theoretical system of digitalized CCC cultivation, provides practical guidance for tool selection, and offers insights for optimizing translation practice teaching.
