Examination Pressure Spillover into Early Childhood Education ——Historical Evidence from Tang Dynasty China and Enlightenment for Modern Education Governance

Abstract：

Examination pressure permeated early childhood education through institutional channels, curricular adaptation, and utilitarian parenting, forming a structural transmission chain in the Tang Dynasty. Drawing on Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, this study contends that this phenomenon arose from the interplay of macro-level selection systems, meso-level educational supply, and micro-level family practices, rather than from parental anxiety alone. A comparison of past and present shows that competition for places in primary schools today and the primary-schoolization of kindergartens follow a similar logic, with pressure seeping down through the educational stages; however, modern governance offers the advantage of proactive intervention. Historical experience suggests three governance priorities: transitional buffers at enrolment thresholds, cultural reorientation away from score-centric values, and equitable public service provision to prevent policy-induced class disparities.
